Immokalee Airport to Become National Guard Home

Naples Daily News, September 15, 2009

Some 26 acres of Immokalee Regional Airport is now home to the Florida National Guard.
Collier County commissioners Tuesday agreed to a 25-year sublease that would will allow joint forces to build a military readiness center.

It is a deal two years in the making, said Theresa Cook, Collier County Airport Authority executive director, who was authorized to begin negotiating in the summer of 2007.

Maj. Gen. Douglas Burnett, the Adjutant General of Florida, lavished praise on commissioners and said he was enthusiastic about the new joint venture.

“You have some great schools here,” Burnett said.

The National Guard also offers contributions to Collier, including opportunity for leadership for area graduates, enhancement of national security objectives and more immediate response to hurricanes or other national disasters.
