Housing Improvements

A healthy community has safe, code-compliant housing for all its citizens. In Immokalee, we are working on addressing three challenges: housing for seasonal and migrant farm worker families, upgrading sub-standard housing in targeted redevelopment neighborhoods, and building additional workforce and senior housing. Our first project is underway.

Esperanza Place to Break Ground
In February 2008, at the behest of the Immokalee Local Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board, the ICRA Board authorized support for affordable farmworker housing at Esperanza Place. The CRA will provide $600,000 of Immokalee CRA Tax Increment Funds (TIF) in increments of $200,000 per year for three years, FY 2009 – FY 2011. In June of 2008, the Collier County CRA Board approved the commitment of funds.

Two partners, the not-for-profit developers Empowerment Alliance of Southwest Florida and Florida Non-Profit Services, Inc., will build 176 rental units for farm worker families and 60 single family homeownership units at Esperanza Place. The $600,000 will offset some of the cost for the infrastructure – roads, sewers, drainage, etc. Construction at Esperanza Place will begin early in 2009.
