Current Projects of the Immokalee MSTU

Main Street Improvements Project

Main Street Improvements Project represents the reconstruction of intersection curbing along Immokalee’s Main Street (SR 29) from 1st Street to 9th Street for the purpose of improving sight lines and creating a safer Main Street corridor. The focus of this project will include the reconstruction of the curbing and landscaped curb extensions (landscaped bump outs) at the intersections to provide better visibility for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the heavily travelled route. When completed the landscape modifications proposed will provide an enhanced aesthetic character for Immokalee’s Main Street and improve both vehicular and pedestrian traffic circulation in the Downtown area.

The design plans for this project are nearing completion and is expected to begin construction in mid 2013. The MSTU Advisory Committee has instructed staff to prepare and submit a grant application to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) – Highway Beautification Council to offset the costs of the improvements. The Immokalee Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and MSTU have already secured additional funding from FDOT for the project through a Joint Participation Agreement with Collier County. The remaining project cost will be funded by the Immokalee Beautification MSTU.

9th Street North Residential Sidewalk Replacement Project

For years now there has been a gap in the existing sidewalk system along the north side of North 9th Street. The Immokalee MSTU has investigated this missing segment of sidewalk and has elected to fund the necessary permitting, construction plans and construction costs to replace this sidewalk segment and remediate the existing gap in the sidewalk system. The MSTU has begun taking the necessary steps towards the infill of this sidewalk gap and anticipates a speedy repair of the existing situation. The project costs will be funded by the Immokalee Beautification MSTU.

Main Street Holiday Decorations Project The Immokalee MSTU is working towards providing illuminated holiday decorations in the downtown area which we hope will include the addition of lighted angels on our blue light poles. Our focus will be at the major intersections along the Main Street route. When completed, this project will certainly take this community’s holiday spirit up a notch and will be a nice addition to the highly successful Christmas Around the World annual event.

The Carson Road Sidewalk Project

The Carson Road Sidewalk Project consists of the construction of almost a mile of sidewalk along the west side of Carson Road, from Westclox Street south to Lake Trafford Road. The proposed sidewalk will be 5 feet in width and constructed of finished concrete. When completed, this sidewalk segment will provide a safe and accessible pedestrian route from the existing residential communities of the Westclox area to the central business district of Immokalee, as well as providing a safe route for residents and students to the Lake Trafford Elementary School and sidewalk infill for a safe pedestrian route to Immokalee High School. The design plans for this project have been completed and is expected to begin construction in early 2013. The project will be funded by the Immokalee Beautification MSTU.
